Child Spaces

Child Spaces
To ensure that visits to the hospital for what ever reason for our younger population is the best experience possible, the foundation has committed to projects to make the environment as child friendly as possible

North Shore Hospital carries the Child Friendly accreditation

Emergency Care Centre

The Children's waiting room & cubicle areas provide cheery images with beautiful murals, with local birdlife and happy children playing outdoors.

Games tables, videos, play stations, puzzles books and a plethora of toys are provided to keep the children and their families calm while they are receiving treatment.

Brightly coloured curtains adorn each cubicle and each child receives an activity pack on arrival.

The Activity packs sponsored from a wide variety of suppliers contain, pencils, colouring books, puzzles, stickers and a range of health information based literature which can be used by the staff or parents as educational tools for issues such as poisoning, burns, meningitis, road crash, pedestrian injury etc

Radiology
A brilliant diversion wall created by Morris and James Pottery & Tileworks. This crazy coloured wall has educational, alphabetic & numeric images as well as games and story telling tiles to keep parents and children distracted & occupied while they wait for X Ray after injury.
Home Care 4 Kids/Paediatric Outpatients
A whole clinic and waiting area devoted to keep children entertained and fascinated while receiving their check ups and treatments from the Paediatric team

Special Care Baby Unit
The Special Care Baby Unit for premature and low weight babies is designed to be a family friendly environment despite its high tech capacity.
The unit design is enhanced with beautiful children's imagery, mobiles, and play areas for siblings even down to the tiny designer print cot sheets and tiny hats and booties for the babies.
Parents are provided with a lounge and there is accommodation available to enable closeness to the tiny babies.
Each baby is given a covered journal book, made by Rotary Inner Wheel ladies and an intricate record of there stay is recorded

Gifts and toys for babies & children
A huge volume of toys, gifts and clothing is provided for babies and children who receive their services from North Shore Hospital.
There are teams of committed knitters who provide huge amounts of tiny outfits for the Special Care Baby Unit on an ongoing basis
The community is very generous with their contribution and includes, Church Groups, Women's Institute, Rotary, Lionesses, Rotary Inner Wheel, Kiwanis as well as many individuals

Knitting
Gift packages are also provided to the Social Work department to distribute to families in need.

Quilting
Quilting Guilds work tirelessly to provide beautiful quilts for the very tiny premature babies and some of these are specifically made as memorial quilts in the event of still birth

Christmas
Xmas time sees each baby born over the weeks leading up to Xmas and immediately preceding receives the gift of a tiny teddy.

Social work teams are busy at this time and all the Nursing Staff participate in a project named "Staff Share", when they contribute grocery items and gifts for the less fortunate.
These are packaged and delivered by the Social Work Team
